The Blessing of the Peacemaker
Matthew 5:9
Jesus, in the Sermon on the Mount, describes the character of those who belong to the
Kingdom of God. These are not merely attitudes but spiritual characteristics produced in a
transformed life.
One of the most powerful statements Jesus makes is about peacemakers.
Notice He does not say blessed are the peace lovers or blessed are the peace keepers.
He says blessed are the peacemakers.
Peacemaking is active, intentional, and sometimes costly.
James says: ‘Those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of
righteousness.’ (James 3:18 LB)
The principle for peace is the same as the principle for farming: you reap what you sow.
Never underestimate the power of a seed.
ILLUSTRATION – THE POWER OF A SEED
The story of a man named Heinz illustrates the power of peacemaking.
In 1934 Adolf Hitler was a growing threat across Europe and anti‑Semitism was spreading
rapidly.
Among those affected was an eleven‑year‑old Jewish boy named Heinz living in the Bavarian
village of Furth.
His father, a schoolteacher, lost his job simply because he was Jewish.
Nazi youth gangs roamed the streets harassing Jewish families.
Heinz learned to stay alert and avoid trouble whenever possible.
One day he found himself face‑to‑face with a bully and a beating seemed certain.
Instead of fighting back, the boy spoke words that persuaded the troublemaker not to fight.
His words stopped the conflict before it began.
That young boy discovered the power of words to create peace.
His family later escaped Germany and moved to America.
The boy Heinz grew up to become known worldwide for negotiating peace during the Cold
War.
Today we know him as Henry Kissinger.
QUESTION
How good are you at making peace? Not just avoiding conflict, but actively creating peace.
MAIN TRUTH
Peacemakers plant seeds of peace that produce a harvest of righteousness.
POINT 1 – PEACEMAKERS SEEK TO RECONCILE PEOPLE TO GOD
2 Corinthians 5:18 – God reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of
reconciliation.
Romans 5:1 – Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord
Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 2:14 – For He Himself is our peace.
Peacemakers share the gospel and help people find peace with God.
POINT 2 – PEACEMAKERS SEEK PEACE IN RELATIONSHIPS
Romans 12:18 – If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.
Hebrews 12:14 – Pursue peace with all people.
Peace does not happen automatically. Someone must plant seeds.
SEEDS OF PEACE
1. A kind word – Proverbs 15:1 says a soft answer turns away wrath.
2. Acts of kindness – small acts such as helping a neighbor or encouraging someone.
3. Forgiveness – Colossians 3:13 reminds us to forgive as the Lord forgave us.
CULTIVATING THE SEED
Seeds do not grow overnight. Farmers must water, fertilize, and cultivate the crop.
The same is true with peace. Seeds of peace must be watered with prayer, patience, and love.
James 3:18 reminds us that peacemakers reap a harvest of righteousness.
Jesus said, ‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.’
(Matthew 5:9)
Peacemakers act like their Father because God is the ultimate peacemaker.
He reconciled the world to Himself through Jesus Christ.
Ask yourself today: where can I plant a seed of peace?
Never underestimate the power of a seed.
