Recognizing God and His Son through the Holy Spirit:

John 4:7-42: (The Samaritan woman at the well)

Jesus rests by hisself by the well when a Samaritan woman comes up to Him. He asks her to give Him a drink. She responds, why do you ask me seeing that Jews want no dealings with Samaritans.

Vs. (10): Jesus answered and said to her,

“If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you. ‘Give Me a drink’, you would have asked of Him, and He would have given you living water.”

  • Jesus is referring of course to the Holy Spirit.

She explains that the well was dug by their Patriarch Jacob who used it and gave it to her ancestors

However Vs. (13): Jesus answered and said to her:

“Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life”.

The woman asks for this water, but Jesus asks her to get her husband (the man she’s living with) then begins to tell her, her life story. She being amazed asked if he was a prophet. Jesus explains:

(Vs. 23-26)

23: “But the hour is coming and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. (24): God is Spirit and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth”.

The woman acknowledged that the Messiah was coming and when He comes He’ll reveal all things to them.

Jesus says: vs. (26): “I who speak to you am He”.

Jesus stayed in that city for two days and many Samaritans believed, because of the woman’s testimony and because they heard Jesus’ own words.

In Genesis 33:17-20

We see the well’s origin and the altar Jacob built there.

Succoth = tabernacle

Shalem = Salem = (perfect peace)

Shechem = Portion

Salem + Shechem = Perfect peace in his portion of promised land

Hamor means (ass or donkey), clay or earth (carnal)

Altar was built and called Ele-o-he Israel (The God of Israel) this is where the well was located and where Jesus met the Samaritan woman. Jesus revealed Himself to the woman

In Exodus 20:18

God reveals Himself on the Mountain, and the Israelites fear and tremble and want Moses to speak to them, not God, lest they die

Leviticus 9:23-24 God visits the camp and the people shout and fall on their faces.

There was a time in my life when I was afraid of the Holy Spirit.

(I feared being one of the people falling out and losing control in church!)

(I feared I would have to “clean-up” my life and wouldn’t have fun anymore)

(Then I was afraid of God’s wrath due to the life I was leading)

However, when I got tired of the life that I was leading and realized there was no future in it, I asked for God to intervene in my life and He blessed me with the Holy Spirit and I was no longer afraid.

Acts 8:14-17 Samaritans received the Holy Spirit

“Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John (two Jews) to them, (15) who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. (16) For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. (17) Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit”.

Do you recognize God? Do you fear Him, do you wrestle with Him as Jacob did in (Genesis 32:24-30)?

Recognize God through the Holy Spirit, don’t wrestle with Him by trying to do things on your own. Surrender to Him and allow Him to lead, guide and direct you. Let Him fight your battles and carry those heavy burdens.
